Paul Geraghty

In 1997 I moved to St Ives.  For many years I painted solely in oils, experimenting with abstraction and using colour to "push and pull", whilst retaining a strong landscape content within the painting.  When I moved to Cornwall, my fascination with the Penwith coast led me to turn towards the sea for inspiration.  The ever-changing weather conditions and lighting effects, combined with the raw energy of the Atlantic have provided me with an enormous range of artistic possibilities.  Although my present work is representational, I feel there are still elements of abstraction in the compositions.  Acrylic is now my preferred medium.  The modern "heavy body" acrylics are as versatile as traditional oil paints, (if not more so).  Strong colours, permanence, a wide range of glazes, emulsions and additives, for opacity, transparency and texture and it's quick drying qualities make it an ideal medium for my work.
